Alfred James, who spent 2008-09 as one of 19 aspiring princpials in Houston A+ Challenge's Regional Principal Leadership Academy, Cohort I , is celebrating the new school year as Principal of Caraway Intermediate School in Aldine ISD.
Alfred distinguished himself as a learner and a leader in Cohort I. He took copious notes during every network meeting and national speaker series event, asked thoughtful and insightful questions that challenged the cohort to think deeply, and spent many hours reflecting on his learning and growth. He spent the summer getting to know his new campus and preparing an entry plan with the support of Houston A+ Challenge RPLA staff members. He also found time to speak to Cohort II during the summer intensive about his journey. He managed to accomplish all of this while nurturing a new baby boy at home.
Alfred is a shining example of someone whose perseverance and focus lead to the realization of his goals. Houston A+ Challenge will continue to support Alfred's growth and development as a transformational instructional leader with coaching and monthly network meetings. Under Alfred's leadership, Caraway Intermediate will no doubt continue on the path to excellence.
This excerpt from Mr. James’ opening address to the Caraway staff on August 13, 2009, will give you a glimpse into the leadership qualities that he possesses and will share with his new school.
"Good Morning Cougar Family.
"As I stand before you today, I have strong convictions about teaching and learning. Robert Hutchins stated, 'The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.' As a child, my parents encouraged me to be a life-long learner. Although they did not phrase it in that manner, they stressed the importance of always trying to learn something new.
"his idea has become a part of my mission and has been one of the driving forces throughout my journey. They helped me to realize that if I want to have a positive impact on the lives of others, then I must strive for excellence and encourage people to do the same. As a result, I became an educator and have always been passionate about serving students -- especially those who need constant care and who encourage me.
