HOUSTON, August 3, 2018 – Houston A+ Challenge acquires Susanna Fontenot as their new Director of Development. Susanna Fontenot has a varied background as a writer, teacher leader, a communications professional and an international learner. She entered the education profession as a Teach For America corps member, and spent five years teaching reading and writing in Houston ISD before joining Houston A+ Challenge in 2012.

During her initial time at the organization, Susanna provided A+ literacy coaching at middle schools in Alief ISD, Aldine ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, KIPP Houston and YES Prep Public Schools. Susanna went back to the classroom in 2014 in partnership with Neighborhood Centers (now Baker Ripley). Susanna returned to Houston ISD in 2015 to complete her graduate studies while teaching ELA and reading intervention courses. Before returning to Houston A+ Challenge most recently, Susanna supported high schools through instructional coaching and curriculum writing as a Teacher Development Specialist in Houston ISD.

Susanna holds a B.A. in journalism from American University (Washington, D.C.), including a semester of study abroad at Peking University in Beijing, China. She has experience in media relations, providing editorial, research, and production assistance at a firm in D.C. for media, authors, corporate executives, members of Congress and Administration officials. Susanna earned an M.A. in Public School Building Leadership from Columbia University Teachers College in 2016. Susanna is a member of the International Literacy Association, National Council of Teachers of English, the American Association of University Women, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Susanna’s commitment to high-quality education stems from a sense of urgency to make sure all schools are places where relationships and a sense of community matter just as much as the rich learning experiences happening there.
