A+ received this fantastic message from a literacy specialist for KIPP Schools.  We are thrilled that the training and coaching we provided has led to such positive outcomes.

Dear coaches,

reading_cardsJust wanted to reach out to thank you again for our training around STAAR and share some great news.  At two primary schools that I support, we have integrated the Readers and Writers Workshop model for test prep, and have seen amazing results.  Teachers are starting to ask, “why didn’t we teach like this from the beginning of the year?”– which is by far my favorite thing to hear right now when I think of the possibilities for next year now that teachers are bought in to the Readers and Writers Workshop model.

Students are growing in stamina and metacognition, and classrooms are full of quality instruction where students are doing the heavy lifting and teachers are giving individualized conferences.  In one school in particular, the third grade decided to give a benchmark last week to measure growth.  While I cautioned against this, they still decided to go ahead with the benchmark, and we created one using MCAS released passages and some 2013 STAAR passages.

After implementing just one unit from the workshop, the number of students who reached the passing baseline score grew by 22 percentage points, and the number of students who reached the Advanced level doubled.

Thanks for all you do!I just wanted to share because teachers and admin are incredibly thankful for the training on Feb 27th and believe this is the source of all their growth (that and teachers working hard to take a risk with a new learning format).
